SUMMARY:Orthros and Divine Liturgy - Sunday of Orthodoxy
DESCRIPTION:THE EPISTLE \n(For the Forty Martyrs of Sebastia) \nThou\, O Lord\, will preserve us and keep us from this generation. \nSave me\, O Lord\, for the godly man hath disappeared. \nThe Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews. (12:1-10) \nBrethren\, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses\, let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely; and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us\, looking to Jesus: the Pioneer and Perfecter of our faith\, Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross\, despising the shame\, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him Who endured from sinners such hostility against Himself\, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you forgotten the exhortation which addresses you as sons? “My son: do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord\, nor lose courage when you are punished by Him; for the Lord disciplines him whom He loves\, and chastises every son whom He receives.” It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline\, in which all have participated\, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this\, we have had earthly fathers to discipline us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father? \n\nTHE GOSPEL \n(For the First Sunday of Great Lent) \nThe Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. John. (1:43-51) \nAt that time\, Jesus decided to go to Galilee. And He found Philip and said to him\, “Follow Me.”  Now Philip was from Bethsaida\, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael\, and said to him\, “We have found Him of Whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote\, Jesus of Nazareth\, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael said to him\, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him\, “Come and see.” Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him\, and said of him\, “Behold\, an Israelite indeed\, in whom is no guile!” Nathanael said to Jesus\, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him\, “Before Philip called you\, when you were under the fig tree\, I saw you.” Nathanael answered Him\, “Rabbi\, Thou art the Son of God! Thou art the King of Israel!” Jesus answered him\, “Because I said to you\, I saw you under the fig tree\, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these.” And Jesus said to him\, “Truly\, truly\, I say to you\, you will see heaven opened\, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.”

SUMMARY:Orthros & Divine Liturgy - Forgiveness Sunday
DESCRIPTION:THE EPISTLE \n(For Sunday of Forgiveness) \nSing praises to our God\, sing praises. Clap your hands\, all ye nations. \nThe Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans. (13:11-14:4) \n            Brethren\, now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent\, the day is at hand. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness\, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk becomingly\, as in the day\, not in reveling and drunkenness\, not in chambering and licentiousness\, not in strife and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ\, and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts. But as for the one who is weak in faith\, receive him\, but not for disputes over opinions. For one believes he may eat anything; but the weak person eats herbs. Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat\, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him. Who are you to be the judge over the servant of a stranger? To his own master he either stands or falls; but he will be made to stand; for God is able to make him stand. \n\nTHE GOSPEL \n(For Sunday of Forgiveness) \nThe Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (6:14-21) \nThe Lord said to His Disciples: If you forgive men their trespasses\, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses\, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. And when you fast\, do not look dismal\, like the hypocrites\, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly\, I say to you\, they have received their reward. But when you fast\, anoint your head and wash your face\, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father Who is in secret; and your Father Who sees in secret will reward you. Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth\, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal\, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven\, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is\, there will your heart be also.

SUMMARY:Orthros & Divine Liturgy - Sunday of the Last Judgment
DESCRIPTION:THE EPISTLE \n(For Sunday of the Last Judgment) \nThe Lord is my strength and my song. With chastisement hath the Lord chastened me. \nThe Reading from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians. (8:8-9:2) \n            Brethren\, food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat\, and no better off if we do. Only take care\, lest this liberty of yours somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if any one sees you—a man of knowledge—at table in an idol’s temple\, might he not be encouraged\, if his conscience is weak\, to eat food offered to idols? And so by your knowledge this weak man is destroyed\, the brother for whom Christ died. Thus\, sinning against your brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak\, you sin against Christ. Therefore\, if food is a cause of my brother’s falling\, I will never eat meat\, lest I cause my brother to fall. Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? If to others I am not an apostle\, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. \n\nTHE GOSPEL \n(For Sunday of the Last Judgment) \nThe Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (25:31-46) \nThe Lord said\, “When the Son of man comes in His glory\, and all the angels with Him\, then He will sit on His glorious throne. Before Him will be gathered all the nations\, and He will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats\, and He will place the sheep at His right hand\, but the goats at the left. Then the King will say to those at His right hand\, ‘Come\, O blessed of my Father\, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave Me food\, I was thirsty and you gave Me drink\, I was a stranger and you welcomed Me\, I was naked and you clothed Me\, I was sick and you visited Me\, I was in prison and you came to Me.’ Then the righteous will answer Him\, ‘Lord\, when did we see Thee hungry and feed Thee\, or thirsty and give Thee drink? And when did we see Thee a stranger and welcome Thee\, or naked and clothe Thee? And when did we see Thee sick or in prison and visit Thee?’ And the King will answer them\, ‘Truly\, I say to you\, as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren\, you did it to Me.’ Then He will say to those at his left hand\, ‘Depart from Me\, you cursed\, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave Me no food\, I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink\, I was a stranger and you did not welcome Me\, naked and you did not clothe Me\, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’ Then they also will answer\, ‘Lord\, when did we see Thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison\, and did not minister to Thee?’ Then He will answer them\, ‘Truly\, I say to you\, as you did it not to one of the least of these\, you did it not to Me.’ And they will go away into eternal punishment\, but the righteous into eternal life.”

SUMMARY:Orthros & Divine Liturgy - Sunday of the Prodigal Son
DESCRIPTION:THE EPISTLE \n(For Sunday of the Prodigal Son) \nLet Thy mercy\, O Lord\, be upon us. Rejoice in the Lord\, O ye righteous. \nThe Reading from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians. (6:12-20) \n            Brethren\, all things are lawful for me\, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me\, but I will not be enslaved by anything. Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food; but God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for immorality\, but for the Lord\, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by His power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who joins himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For\, as it is written\, “The two shall become one flesh.” But he who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him. Shun immorality. Every other sin which a man commits is outside the body; but the immoral man sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you\, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body\, and in your spirit\, which are God’s. \n\nTHE GOSPEL \n(For Sunday of the Prodigal Son) \nThe Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (15:11-32) \n            The Lord spoke this parable: “There was a man who had two sons; and the younger of them said to his father\, ‘Father\, give me the share of property that falls to me.’ And he divided his living between them. Not many days later\, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country\, and there he squandered his property in loose living. And when he had spent everything\, a great famine arose in that country\, and he began to be in want. So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country\, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have fed on the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said\, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare\, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father\, and I will say to him\, “Father\, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.”’ And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance\, his father saw him and had compassion\, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him\, ‘Father\, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants\, ‘Bring quickly the best robe\, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand\, and shoes on his feet; and bring the fatted calf and kill it\, and let us eat and make merry; for this my son was dead\, and is alive again; he was lost\, and is found.’ And they began to make merry. Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house\, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what this meant. And he said to him\, ‘Your brother has come\, and your father has killed the fatted calf\, because he has received him safe and sound.’ But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him\, but he answered his father\, ‘Lo\, these many years I have served you\, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a kid that I might make merry with my friends. But when this son of yours came\, who has devoured your living with harlots\, you killed for him the fatted calf!’ And he said to him\, ‘Son\, you are always with me\, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to make merry and be glad\, for this your brother was dead\, and is alive; he was lost\, and is found.’”

SUMMARY:Orthros & Divine Liturgy - Sunday of the Pharisee and Publican
DESCRIPTION:THE EPISTLE \n(For Sunday of the Pharisee and Publican) \nMy soul doth magnify the Lord\, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. \nFor He hath regarded the humility of His servant.* \nThe Reading from the Second Epistle of St. Paul to St. Timothy. (3:10-15) \nTimothy my son\, you have observed my teaching\, my conduct\, my aim in life\, my faith\, my patience\, my love\, my steadfastness\, my persecutions\, and my sufferings; and what befell me at Antioch\, at Iconium\, and at Lystra. What persecutions I endured; yet from them all\, the Lord rescued me. Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted\, while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse\, deceivers and deceived. But as for you\, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed\, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. \n* The Prokeimenon is for the Presentation\, in recognition of the Leave-taking of the Feast. \nTHE GOSPEL \n(For Sunday of the Pharisee and Publican) \nThe Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (18:10-14) \nThe Lord spoke this parable: “Two men went up into the temple to pray\, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself\, ‘God\, I thank Thee that I am not like other men\, extortionists\, unjust\, adulterers\, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector\, standing far off\, would not even lift up his eyes to Heaven\, but beat his breast\, saying\, ‘God\, be merciful to me a sinner!’ I tell you\, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled\, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

(7:7-17) \nBrethren\, it is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior. Here tithes are received by mortal men; there\, by one of whom it is testified that he lives. One might even say that Levi himself\, who receives tithes\, paid tithes through Abraham\, for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him. Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law)\, what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek\, rather than one named after the order of Aaron? For when there is a change in the priesthood\, there is necessarily a change in the law as well. For the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe\, from which no one has ever served at the altar. For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah\, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek\, who has become a priest\, not according to a legal requirement concerning bodily descent but by the power of an indestructible life. For it is witnessed of him\, “Thou art a priest forever\, after the order of Melchizedek.” \nTHE GOSPEL \nThe Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (2:22-40) \nIn those days\, the parents of Jesus brought Him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord\, “Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”)\, and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord\, “a pair of turtledoves\, or two young pigeons.” Now there was a man in Jerusalem\, whose name was Simeon\, and this man was righteous and devout\, looking for the consolation of Israel\, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And inspired by the Spirit he came into the Temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus\, to do for him according to the custom of the law\, he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said\, “Lord\, now lettest thou Thy servant depart in peace\, according to Thy word; for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation\, which Thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples\, a light for revelation to the Gentiles\, and for glory to Thy people Israel.” And His father and his mother marveled at what was said about Him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother\, “Behold\, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel\, and for a sign that is spoken against (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also)\, that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.” And there was a prophetess\, Anna\, the daughter of Phanuel\, of the tribe of Asher; she was of a great age\, having lived with her husband seven years from her virginity\, and as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple\, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks to God\, and spoke of Him to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. And when they had performed everything according to the law of the Lord\, they returned into Galilee\, to their own city\, Nazareth. And the child grew and became strong\, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon Him.

SUMMARY:Orthros and Divine Liturgy - 15th Sunday of Luke
DESCRIPTION:KONTAKION OF THE PRESENTATION OF CHRIST IN TONE ONE \nThou\, O Christ God\, Who by Thy Birth\, didst sanctify the Virgin’s womb\, and\, as is meet\, didst bless Simeon’s arms\, and didst also come to save us; preserve Thy fold in wars\, and confirm them whom Thou didst love\, for Thou alone art the Lover of mankind. \n\nTHE EPISTLE \n(For the Thirty-second Sunday after Pentecost) \nO Lord\, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance. \nTo Thee\, O Lord\, have I cried\, O my God. \nThe Reading from the First Epistle of St. Paul to St. Timothy. (4:9-15) \nTimothy\, my son\, the saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and strive\, because we have our hope set on the living God\, Who is the Savior of all men\, especially of those who believe. Command and teach these things. Let no one despise your youth\, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct\, in love\, in faith\, in purity. Until I come\, attend to the public reading of scripture\, to preaching\, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift you have\, which was given you by prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their hands upon you. Practice these duties; devote yourself to them\, so that all may see your progress. \n\nTHE GOSPEL \n(For the Fifteenth Sunday of Luke—“Zacchaeus”) \nThe reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (19:1-10) \nAt that time\, Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector\, and rich. And he sought to see Who Jesus was\, but could not\, on account of the crowd\, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Jesus\, for He was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place\, He looked up and said to him\, “Zacchaeus\, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today.” So he made haste and came down\, and received Him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured\, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord\, “Behold\, Lord\, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything\, I restore it fourfold.” And Jesus said to him\, “Today salvation has come to this house\, since he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost.”

SUMMARY:Orthros and Divine Liturgy - 12th Sunday of Luke
DESCRIPTION:KONTAKION OF THE PRESENTATION OF CHRIST IN TONE ONE \nThou\, O Christ God\, Who by Thy Birth\, didst sanctify the Virgin’s womb\, and\, as is meet\, didst bless Simeon’s arms\, and didst also come to save us; preserve Thy fold in wars\, and confirm them whom Thou didst love\, for Thou alone art the Lover of mankind. \n\nTHE EPISTLE \n(For the Twenty-ninth Sunday after Pentecost) \nThou\, O Lord\, shalt preserve us and keep us from this generation. \nSave me\, O Lord\, for the godly man hath disappeared. \nThe Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Colossians. (3:4-11) \nBrethren\, when Christ\, Who is our life\, appears\, then you also will appear with him in glory.  Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: fornication\, impurity\, passion\, evil desire\, and covetousness\, which is idolatry.  On account of these\, the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience.  In these you once walked\, when you lived in them.  But now put them all away: anger\, wrath\, malice\, slander\, and foul talk from your mouth.  Do not lie to one another\, seeing that you have put off the old nature with its practices and have put on the new nature\, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its Creator.  Here there cannot be Greek and Jew\, circumcised and uncircumcised\, barbarian\, Scythian\, slave\, free man\, but Christ is all\, and in all. \n\n\n\nTHE GOSPEL \n(For the Twelfth Sunday of Luke—“Ten Lepers”) \nThe reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (17:12-19) \nAt that time\, as Jesus entered a village\, He was met by ten lepers\, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said\, “Jesus\, Master\, have mercy on us.”  When He saw them He said to them\, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.”  And as they went they were cleansed.  Then one of them\, when he saw that he was healed\, turned back\, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet\, giving Him thanks.  Now he was a Samaritan.  Then Jesus said\, “Were not ten cleansed?  Where are the nine?  Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?”  And He said to him\, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.”

SUMMARY:Orthros and Divine Liturgy - Sunday after Epiphany
DESCRIPTION:KONTAKION OF THE THEOPHANY OF CHRIST IN TONE FOUR \n(**The original melody**) \nOn this day Thou hast appeared * unto the whole world\, * and Thy light\, O Sovereign Lord\, * is signed on us who sing Thy praise * and chant with knowledge: Thou hast now come\, * Thou hast appeared\, O Thou Light unapproachable. \n\nTHE EPISTLE \n(For the Sunday after Theophany of Christ) \nLet Thy mercy\, O Lord\, be upon us. Rejoice in the Lord\, O ye righteous. \nThe Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians. (4:7-13) \nBrethren\, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.  Therefore\, it is said\, “When He ascended on high He led a host of captives\, and He gave gifts to men.”  (In saying\, “He ascended\,” what does it mean but that He had also descended into the lower parts of the earth?  He who descended is He who also ascended far above all the heavens\, that He might fill all things.)  And His gifts were that some should be apostles\, some prophets\, some evangelists\, some pastors and teachers\, to equip the saints for the work of ministry\, for building up the body of Christ\, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God\, to mature manhood\, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. \n\nTHE GOSPEL \n(For the Sunday after Theophany of Christ) \nThe reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (4:12-17) \nAt that time\, when Jesus heard that John had been arrested\, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea\, in the territory of Zebulon and Naphtali\, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “The land of Zebulon and the land of Naphtali\, toward the sea\, across the Jordan\, Galilee of the Gentiles—the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light\, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to preach\, saying\, “Repent\, for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”

SUMMARY:Feast of the Holy Theophany - Blessing of the water following the morning festal Divine Liturgy!
DESCRIPTION:KONTAKION OF THE FOREFEAST OF THEOPHANY IN TONE FOUR \n(**On this day Thou hast appeared**) \nIn the running waters of * the Jordan River\, * on this day the Lord of all * crieth to John: Be not afraid * and hesitate not to baptize Me\, * for I am come to save Adam\, the first-formed man. \n\nTHE EPISTLE \n(For the Sunday before the Theophany of Christ) \nO Lord\, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance. Unto Thee\, O Lord\, will I cry\, O my God. \nThe Reading from the Second Epistle of St. Paul to St. Timothy. (4:5-8) \nMy child Timothy\, be watchful in all things\, suffer hardship\, do the work of an evangelist\, fulfill your ministry. For\, I am already being poured out as a libation\, and the season of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight\, I have finished the course\, and I have guarded the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness\, which the Lord\, the righteous Judge\, will reward me at that day\, and not to me only\, but also to all those who have loved His appearing. \n\nTHE GOSPEL \n(For the Sunday before the Theophany of Christ) \nThe reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark. (1:1-8) \nThe beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ\, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet\, “Behold\, I send my messenger before thy face\, who shall prepare thy way; the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord\, make his paths straight.” John the Baptizer appeared in the wilderness\, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And there went out to him all the country of Judea\, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan\, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair\, and had a leather girdle around his waist\, and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached\, saying\, “After me comes He Who is mightier than I\, the strap of Whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

SUMMARY:Divine Liturgy and Prayer for the new year - Feast of St. Basil the Great & Circumcision of the Lord
DESCRIPTION:THE EPISTLE \nMy mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding. \nHear this\, all ye people. \nThe reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Colossians. (2:8-12) \nBrethren\, see to it that no one makes a prey of you by philosophy and empty deceit\, according to human tradition\, according to the elemental spirits of the universe\, and not according to Christ. For in Him the whole fullness of the Godhead dwells bodily\, and you have come to fullness of life in Him\, Who is the head of all rule and authority. In Him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands\, by putting off the body of flesh in the circumcision of Christ; and you were buried with Him in baptism\, in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the working of God\, Who raised Him from the dead. \n\nTHE GOSPEL \nThe reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (2:20-21\, 40-52) \nAnd it came to pass that the shepherds returned\, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen\, as it had been told them. And at the end of eight days\, when He was circumcised\, He was called Jesus\, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb. And the child grew and became strong\, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon Him. Now His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. And when He was twelve years old\, they went up according to custom; and when the feast was ended\, as they were returning\, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it\, but supposing Him to be in the company they went a day’s journey\, and they sought Him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances; and when they did not find Him\, they returned to Jerusalem\, seeking Him. After three days they found Him in the temple\, sitting among the teachers\, listening to them and asking them questions; and all who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers. And when they saw Him they were astonished; and His mother said to Him\, “Son\, why hast Thou treated us so? Behold\, Thy father and I have been looking for Thee anxiously.” And Jesus said to them\, “How is it that you sought Me? Did you not know that I must be in My Father’s house?” And they did not understand the saying which He spoke to them. And He went down with them and came to Nazareth\, and was obedient to them; and His mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature\, and in favor with God and man.

SUMMARY:Orthros & Divine Liturgy – Sunday After Nativity
DESCRIPTION:THE EPISTLE \n(For the Sunday after Nativity of Christ) \nGod is wondrous in His saints. Bless God in the congregations. \nThe Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians. (1:11-19) \nBrethren\, I would have you know that the Gospel\, which was preached by me\, is not man’s gospel.  For I did not receive it from man\, nor was I taught it\, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ.  For you have heard of my former life in Judaism\, how I persecuted the Church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people; so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers.  But when He who had set me apart before I was born\, and had called me through His grace\, was pleased to reveal His Son to me\, in order that I might preach Him among the Gentiles\, I did not confer with flesh and blood\, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me\, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus.  Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas\, and remained with him fifteen days.  But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord’s brother. \nTHE GOSPEL \n(For the Sunday after Nativity of Christ) \nThe Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (2:13-23) \nWhen the wise men had departed\, behold\, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said\, “Rise\, take the Child and His mother\, and flee to Egypt\, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the Child\, to destroy Him.”  And he rose and took the Child and His mother by night\, and departed to Egypt\, and remained there until the death of Herod.  This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet\, “Out of Egypt have I called My Son.”  Then Herod\, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men\, was in a furious rage\, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region\, who were two years old or under\, according to the time which he had ascertained from the wise men.  Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: “A voice was heard in Ramah\, wailing and loud lamentation\, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled\, because they were no more.”  But when Herod died\, behold\, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt\, saying\, “Rise\, take the Child and His mother\, and go to the land of Israel\, for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.”  And he rose and took the Child and His mother\, and went to the land of Israel.  But when he heard that Archelaus reigned over Judea in place of his father Herod\, he was afraid to go there\, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee.  And he went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth\, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled\, “He shall be called a Nazarene.”
